About Kennisnet

Kennisnet is the organisation that helps schools with the use of ICT. They ensure that schools can use all the possibilities of new technologies to improve the quality and accessibility of education.

Kennisnet has three important tasks. First, they share information and expertise in the field of digitalization. In addition, they provide and realize all kinds of ICT services that education in the Netherlands uses. Finally, they help schools map out the ICT infrastructure and advise on this.

Content Migration and WCAG Guidelines

The Kennisnet website was technically outdated and needed to be replaced. Over time, so much content had been published that there was more structure had to come in. The user was given too little support and guidance to move through the site. Accessibility was also a problem: the website did not comply with WCAG 2.1 guidelines, which is a must have for every site, especially if you are in the public sector.

To some extent, Kennisnet itself had already mapped out what the new content structure should look like, but to some extent it had not. content types are being worked out and the sitemap and wireframes were not yet complete. Typography and visual effect had not yet been determined. The deadline was tight: a new website had to be launched in a few weeks. In short, there was work to be done.

Wireframes and web design

At Van Ons we believe in strong partnerships. With customers and with other experts who can only make the website better. One of those partners is content agency Smart ContentThey were involved at an early stage to help us think about the structure of the content in the new website.

Together we looked at the wireframes that had already been made and we further finalized the sitemap and content plans. We made – together with Kennisnet's own designer – a web design for the website, in which we took into account all accessibility requirements and we investigated which typography would best suit the new website.

Kennisnet is used to everything related to websites en casa to develop. That is why they were happy to look behind the scenes with us. Together we determined the technical requirements and how the new website would fit into Kennisnet's ICT landscape.

Featured: Content Structure and Pillar Pages

The structure of the content has been chosen to use so-called pillar pages to use. These are main pages of a topic where all relevant information can be found.

The pillar pages are completely to your wishes by Kennisnet in the WordPress website. Each pillar page contains five sections where in-depth articles can be found on that topic (Explanation and background, Getting started, etc.)Editors create all the articles which are then automatically ordered are placed on the pillar page. All pillar pages will have the same layout and formatting, where you as a user can easy can navigate by topic without losing track.

The impact: manage the website quickly and easily

With the launch of the new website, much more structure and clarity has been brought to the presentation of the large amounts of content. And that without compromising the ease of manageability: editors write articles, place them on a page and the website ensures that this is presented nicely on the front end.

• Editors can create and publish content faster, with the front end always looking organized and great.
• More richer forms of media can be added: the podcasts can easily be processed on a pillar page
• The long reads are supported with tables of contents, making it easier for the user to navigate through large amounts of text
