A logical and obvious design. With the power of UX.
Because the outdated design no longer matched the current ambitions and values of the IKEA Foundation, a completely new platform was designed. A platform on which the core values – pillars – receive the attention they deserve from the IKEA Foundation. The partners they work with, the grants they provide and of course the philanthropic projects they create are all integrated into the platform in such a way that the layout has become logical and self-evident.
A logical and self-evident design sounds obvious, but it requires a lot of UX research. From a UX perspective, we mean “logical” as a structured and user-friendly information structure. The goal of such logical design is to ensure that users can easily understand, find and use information, resulting in a positive user experience.
This meant that the entire navigation of the old platform was overhauled. A new theme emerged, custom made content blocks and new menu structures. All were included looters from the IKEA Foundation interwoven. You can now immediately see which partners carry out what projects, how much budget (grants) they receive and what has been published about it in the media. Moreover, we developed the structure in such a way that with every grant the budget is kept track of and how much of it has already been spent on the respective organization/partner. So a lot of information made manageable! A self-evident and logical design.

Van Ons is a great team to work with. They are experts in their field, professional and always open and collaborative. Van Ons combines a good eye for the look and feel of a website with in-depth technical knowledge. They respond quickly to feedback and take time for everything.
As a global philanthropic organization, our website is critical to communicating our vision, mission, values and focus of our work. However, we also want to be open and transparent about all our subsidies. This requires publishing a large amount of publicly accessible information on our platform. Van Ons helped us navigate both the technical and design sides of this challenge, developing a platform that looks good, runs smoothly and is easy to update on the backend.
Van Ons designed the previous website of the IKEA Foundation. In 2022, we commissioned Van Ons to redesign our website and build a number of new functionalities for us. We are very happy with the platform they have built.
For everyone, but especially for IKEA employees
One of the aspects that the old platform lacked was awareness of the Foundation for IKEA employees. The reason for this was, among other things, navigation, but also availability and in particular the visibility of projects and people responsible within the Foundation received insufficient attention. More attention to what they do, but also who does it. The design and content of the platform now ensure greater bonding with IKEA employees.
Made up
In addition to the attention for the user, the platform has also been greatly improved for the administrators. The one mentioned before custom made content blocks ensure this. Gutenberg technology ensures that administrators see exactly how their content is displayed at the front end.
The Gutenberg blocks in the WordPress environment also offer great flexibility in formatting content. Content administrators can easily add and customize different types of blocks to customize the content of, for example, partner pages or messages. And because they were specially designed for the IKEA Foundation, each block is immediately provided with the corporate identity.
Where in the old platform the content managers still maintained a lot of data manually, for example for grants, we have automated this in the new platform. With a simple file upload, everything can be updated at once.
